5 Things I Learned at My First Collegiate DECA ICDC

Attending Collegiate DECA ICDC was one of the most impactful experiences of my collegiate career. I went into the conference feeling very nervous, with no idea what to expect.

Here are five key takeaways I gained from my time at Collegiate DECA ICDC.

1. Preparation Builds Confidence

The weeks leading up to competition required focused preparation. I quickly learned that confidence is not something that simply appears. It is built through repetition, research and practice. The more prepared I felt, the more composed I was during my presentation.

2. Professionalism Matters in Every Interaction

From judges to competitors, every interaction at CDECA ICDC underscored professionalism. The way you introduce yourself, communicate ideas and respond to questions leaves a lasting impression. I learned that professionalism is not just about attire. It is about how you communicate, your mindset and actions.

3. Growth Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

Competing at a national level was intimidating at first. However, stepping into that environment pushed me academically and personally. I realized that discomfort is often a signal of growth. The most rewarding moments came from embracing the challenge rather than avoiding it. And at the end of the event, I loved it and wanted to do it again.

4. Networking Is Just as Valuable as Competing

Beyond the competition floor, ICDC offered opportunities to connect with driven, ambitious students from across the country. Conversations with other members expanded my perspective and reminded me that DECA is built on community, not just competition. It is so incredible to have the opportunity to talk to other ambitious students. Don't let the opportunity go by.

5. The Experience Is Bigger Than One Score

While everyone hopes to perform well, CDECA ICDC is about more than results. Exploring a new city, bonding with chapter members and representing my university were experiences that will stay with me long after the conference ended. Success at CDECA ICDC is measured not only by placement but also by growth. Make sure you are having fun and not just worrying about the competition.

Attending CDECA ICDC strengthened my confidence, professionalism and appreciation for the DECA community. For any member preparing to attend, my advice is simple: prepare thoroughly, stay open-minded and embrace every opportunity. The lessons you take away may shape you long after the conference concludes.
