As DECA members, we’ve experienced the impact that Career and Technical Education (CTE) has on students. Advocacy is crucial to ensure continued support and growth for CTE programs, and engaging with your policymakers is one of the most effective ways to make a difference.

Why Advocacy Matters

Policymakers play a significant role in shaping the future of CTE through funding, legislation and program development. As students who directly benefit from Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) programs, we have a unique voice and perspective to share. You can take the first steps toward creating meaningful change by connecting with these resources!

1. Advance CTE's "Engaging Policymakers" Resource

Advance CTE offers a guide to help CTE leaders effectively communicate with policymakers. It provides strategies for sharing CTE's benefits and advocating for policies that support its growth. This resource is essential for anyone looking to make a compelling case for CTE at the state level!

2. Advance CTE's Federal Policy Agenda

Advance CTE’s Federal Policy Agenda outlines key federal policies and legislation that impact CTE programs. Understanding these policies can help you identify areas where advocacy efforts are most needed.

3. Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE)

ACTE is a leading national organization dedicated to the advancement of CTE. They provide tools and resources to help educators, students, and advocates engage with policymakers to ensure CTE remains a priority in education funding and policy decisions.

4. U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE)

OCTAE oversees federal initiatives for CTE and adult education. Engaging with OCTAE provides insights into federal programs and funding opportunities. Advocacy efforts directed here can influence national CTE initiatives.

Take Action Today

As future leaders, DECA members are in a prime position to lead advocacy efforts for CTE. Start by exploring the resources above, sharing your CTE story with elected officials and encouraging others to join the cause. Together, we can ensure that CTE continues to empower students and prepare them for success in college, careers and beyond!

What steps will you take to advocate for CTE? Let’s make an impact together and help these programs stay extraordinary.
