As an advisor, share your contact information so the business partner can stay connected to volunteer opportunities and other ways to get involved. Have a regional or state-level booth to help students become aware of your business.
Describe a memorable partnership experience or standout story working with a DECA chapter.
Many moons ago, I participated in Nationals in Washington DC as a junior collegiate student in the Chapters Activities Manual (Yes, that was a long time ago). It came time to announce the winners, and for some reason, only nine people were called to the stage. It was a top-ten finish. My name had not been called, and the event finalists were recognized. Later that evening, after mentioning this to my advisor. Mr. Harry Applegate came to see our group and gave me my plaque. I had placed fourth but somehow got missed when the finalist announcement was made.
Fast-forward a mere 40+ years, and this past year, Men’s Wearhouse was acknowledged for being a 10-year partner. I was delighted to represent our company by receiving the plaque. It was a full circle moment to be on stage at a National DECA competition and recognized for our work with DECA. Nothing made me prouder!
Throughout my career, I have worked with DECA as a judge and a partner at the local level. It is a great partnership and good for Men's Wearhouse, but I love helping the students mature and grow!
What is the most rewarding aspect of partnering with DECA at the local level?
Interacting, guiding and mentoring DECA members. Dressing the students for prom, their first big interview and their wedding is very rewarding. I have made so many friends through DECA and our local partnerships. DECA is full of good people and an overall amazing organization.
