Evaluating Your Chapter's Mid-Year Success: A Guide for Chapter Officers

Dec 1, 2025

The midpoint of the year is one of the most important moments for any DECA chapter. It's where momentum is either strengthened or lost, and as officers, it's our job to make sure we finish stronger than we started. Taking the time to evaluate your chapter's mid-year success isn't just about checking boxes; it's about understanding your members, your goals, and the impact you're having on them.

1. Revisit Your Chapter Goals

Start by reviewing the goals that your officer team set at the beginning of the year.

Ask yourselves:

  • Are we on pace to reach our membership goals?
  • Are our competitive event preparation strategies working?
  • Have we made any progress on community service or fundraising initiatives?

Equally important as setting sight on the goals that need more attention is celebrating those that have already been hit.

2. Collect Member Feedback, and Actually Use It

Your members are the heartbeat of your chapter. Their experience reflects the success of your leadership. Send out a short survey or host an open conversation during a meeting.

Look for what's working:

  • Do members feel supported in their competitive events?
  • Are the meetings interactive and worthwhile?
  • Are new members feeling connected to the chapter?

Great officers don't just guess what members want; they actually make an effort to ask.

3. Assess Officer Engagement and Collaboration

A strong chapter depends on a strong officer team. Take a moment to reflect honestly:

  • Is communication clear and consistent?
  • Are responsibilities distributed fairly?
  • Are all officers empowered in their role?

Mid-year is the perfect time to reset expectations and reenergize your team.

4. Enhance Competitive Preparation

With district and state conferences looming, it's time to shift your competitive culture into action.

Consider:

  • Offering more practice nights or roleplay workshops
  • Pairing new members with more experienced competitors
  • Using feedback from judges in the early events to improve performance
  • A chapter that supports its competitors early tends to shine at conferences.

5. Recommit to Your Chapter's Impact

Remember that DECA is bigger than competition. Look at your chapter's presence in the school and community:

  • Are you hosting events that make a difference?
  • Are you building partnerships with local businesses?
  • Are you aligning your activities with the guiding principles of DECA?

Mid-year is an opportunity to refocus on the “why” behind your chapter’s work.

Your chapter's mid-year evaluation isn't about pointing out shortcomings - it's about unlocking potential. As officers, you have the opportunity to shape the second half of the year into your chapter's strongest chapter yet. Use this moment to reflect, regroup, and reignite your team's energy. Your members are counting on your leadership - and the best is still ahead. The goal isn't perfection; it's progress.
