It Starts with You: Leading by Example in Every Moment

Leadership isn’t always about being the loudest in the room or having the biggest title. It’s in the way you treat others, the effort you bring and the moments you choose to do the right thing, even when it’s not easy. Leading by example doesn’t start on a stage or a podium. It starts with you.

Here are a few tips to help you lead by example in every moment!

Be the First to Show Up (and the Last to Leave)

You don’t have to announce your effort because people notice it. Setting up for a chapter event, organizing supplies or helping clean up after a meeting is a direct reflection of your consistency and shows what commitment really looks like. Remember that leadership isn’t just about being seen. It’s about being reliable.

Pro tip: If you’re at a DECA social, be the first to help greet guests. Small actions do, in fact, leave lasting impressions!

Speak Up in the Silent Moment

Leadership doesn’t always look like giving a big speech. Sometimes it’s being brave enough to speak up when no one else will, standing up for someone, sharing an idea or reminding others of what’s right. It’s not always easy, but courage rarely is. When you use your voice to stand up for what’s right, you show others that they can do the same. That’s the kind of leadership that spreads.

Turn Everyday Interactions into Impact

You don’t have to plan something huge to make a difference. Leadership can manifest in small moments, such as saying thank you, offering genuine compliments or checking in on a teammate. Those simple actions build trust and respect faster than any title can.

When people feel seen, they are more likely to do their best. I encourage you to Go the Extra and bring positive energy to every meeting. It might seem small, but it’s often the reason others feel comfortable showing up too.

Set the Standard on Social Media

Your influence doesn’t stop once you log off or go home. What you share and how you interact online reflect who you are as a leader. Be intentional about what you post by celebrating your chapter’s wins, highlighting others’ achievements and maintaining authenticity and positivity.

You never know who’s watching and getting inspired by you. Use your platform to demonstrate that leadership can be kind, encouraging, and, most importantly, genuine.

Final tip: Bring the “Go the Extra” Mindset Everywhere!

Leading by example means going beyond what’s expected. It’s showing effort when things get tough and finding ways to make people feel included. When you bring the 'Go the Extra' mindset into your chapter, classroom and community, you set a tone that motivates everyone around you.

At the end of the day, leadership doesn’t start with a title. Leadership starts with you.
