As your first DECA conference approaches, it’s easy to focus on preparation for role-plays and exams. But true leadership doesn’t start when holding up glass at the podium. It starts by taking the initiative every day. Whether you are helping a classmate or taking on a new challenge, each day is an opportunity to grow into a stronger leader.

Here are four ways you can continue developing as a leader this semester:

1. Support Local Food Donation Programs

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, it’s almost time for the season of giving. One of the best ways to help out your community is by partnering with local food donation programs. Organizing food drives at your school can bring hope to families who might otherwise go without during the holidays.

Want to take it a step further? Sign up to package food at donation centers! Your time and effort can make a direct impact on your community, turning generosity into full plates for families.

2. Participate in School Clubs

Submerge yourself in new topics and environments. Leadership isn’t only about guiding others, it’s about seeking growth and collaboration. Joining school clubs allows you to meet new people who think differently and share unique perspectives. By learning from those around you while also sharing your ideas, you are growing as a leader.

3. Visit Senior Homes and Homeless Shelters

Leadership is rooted in community, and what better way to give back than by visiting senior homes and homeless shelters? By talking with residents and learning about their stories, senior homes and homeless shelters offer a unique perspective that can foster empathy. Pushing you out of your comfort zone, these visits can help connect you with people from diverse backgrounds. These experiences make you more compassionate and aware of those in your community, preparing students to lead with more heart.

4. Participate in Chapter Campaigns

Although conferences are still approaching, DECA provides students with opportunities to lead now. DECA offers five different chapter campaigns: Community Service, Innovations and Entrepreneurship, Membership, Promotional and Advocacy. Learn more about how your chapter can rally behind one of DECA’s powerful goals!

We can’t wait to see what DECA members achieve and how they continue to grow. Take the next step to becoming a leader today and share your experiences by tagging @decainc on social media.
