Winter Break is fast approaching, and you might be wondering, How can I stay involved with DECA over the break? This article outlines the various opportunities available for you to stay engaged with our organization and prepare for the next semester.
1. Get Ahead in Competitions
It’s never too early to get started on more competition preparation for the upcoming competition season!
If you’re participating in a case study competition, consider taking a practice exam or reviewing past year KPI’s to develop ideas for what you could say if they appeared during your competition (make a document list).
For prepared events, use the break to advance your written project by completing a strong first draft before classes resume. If your project requires external research, this is also a valuable opportunity to connect with business professionals while their schedules are likely to be lighter.
2. Complete Passport Program Requirements
Avoid the stress of last-minute submissions by dedicating part of your break to Passport Program requirements. Activities such as community service, writing a DECA Direct article, or attending a networking event can all be completed during this time. Inviting fellow members to join you can make the process both productive and enjoyable.
3. Set Goals for the New Year
The New Year provides a natural moment for reflection and planning. Take time to review your accomplishments from the past year and identify areas for growth. You may not feel like you’ve achieved a lot, but I guarantee that if you set aside 30 minutes to review your pictures, reflect on key achievements, and discuss the year with friends, you’ll feel very accomplished.
From there, set intentional goals for your DECA involvement, academic progress, career development, and personal interests. Having a clear direction will help you start the spring semester with purpose and confidence.
4. Continue Building Your Network
Networking remains one of the most valuable aspects of DECA, and Winter Break offers many informal opportunities to build meaningful connections. Whether you’re visiting your hometown, eating at a restaurant, attending community events, or simply engaging in everyday interactions, take the initiative to introduce yourself and learn from others. You never know when a casual conversation may lead to a future opportunity.
5. Share on Social Media
As you participate in DECA-related activities over the break, share your experiences and tag @collegiatedeca for a chance to be featured. If your travels take you somewhere snowy, sunny, or scenic, consider creating and posting a photo of a unique DECA Diamond (perhaps one in the snow or on the beach).
6. Most Important of All
Above all, remember that Winter Break is a time to recharge. After the busy semester, be sure to rest, spend time with friends and family, take time for yourself, and enjoy! A balanced break will help you return refreshed and ready to excel.
No matter how you spend your time, we hope your Winter Break is productive, enjoyable, and filled with opportunities to stay connected with DECA. Enjoy your time off and remember to take advantage of the chance to get a head start on the semester ahead!
