Think back to the night before the first day of school. Your backpack is packed, your schedule is saved to your phone, and you’ve probably already picked out what you’re going to wear. Maybe you’re excited to see your friends, nervous about a new class, or already thinking about everything you want to accomplish this year.
While all those preparations matter, there is one thing that will have an even bigger impact on your year than any school supply or planner: your mindset.
Your success starts long before the bell even rings, with the choices you make, the habits you build and the attitude you bring into every opportunity. There are three ways to set yourself up for success before the school year begins.
1. Set goals that excite you.
Instead of making one huge goal, think about what you want to accomplish by the end of the year. Maybe it’s qualifying for ICDC, earning a leadership position, improving your grades or simply speaking up during chapter meetings. Next, break those goals into smaller milestones you can celebrate along the way!
2. Say “yes” more often.
The best opportunities usually are not the ones you planned for, but the ones you almost talked yourself out of. Join a committee, competing in a new event, attending a conference, or introducing yourself to someone new. Discovering what you are capable of comes with every “yes” you say.
3. Remember why you started.
When the year starts to get busy, it’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, competitions, and responsibilities. Take a moment to remember why you joined DECA in the first place. Maybe it was to build confidence, meet new people, explore a career path, or challenge yourself. Keeping that purpose in mind will help you stay motivated all year long!
The first day of school doesn’t declare it the starting line; it is simply the first checkpoint. The foundation for a successful year is built before you ever walk into the classroom. It will be built through your mindset, your preparation, and your willingness to embrace new opportunities.
This school year, do not just prepare your backpack, prepare your mindset. Success doesn’t start when the first bell rings; it starts with the decisions you make today.
