Case Study of the Week: Incentive to Return to Office

May 12, 2025

Human Resources Management

You are the director of human resources for Smart Venture, a small marketing consulting firm with just over thirty full-time employees located in a city of 400,000 people.

Smart Venture provides full-time employees with competitive salaries, annual paid time off, various insurance options, retirement savings plans, bonuses and funds for personal professional development. Smart Venture has allowed full-time employees to manage their own flexible work arrangements since the pandemic and the majority work from home.

The president of Smart Venture would like more employees to return to work in the office rather than working from home. The president is reluctant to mandate all employees return to the office since the flexible work arrangement is part of the company’s total rewards.

Rather than forcing employees to return to the office, the president would like you to examine the current total rewards system and create an attractive incentive for employees that return to working in the office. The incentive cannot be related to salary and must be ethical.  The president wants you to explain how the incentive is both valuable and impactful.
