As college decisions hit inboxes, the temptation to take a step away from academics and extracurriculars is real. But for a DECA senior, these few weeks can serve as a launchpad for your future success.

Scholarship Finalizing

Many scholarships have deadlines right around the corner. Don't leave money on the table; make sure to run through this checklist before the end of the week!

  • Financial Aid Office Check: Visit your college’s financial aid portal one last time. Are there department-specific scholarships you missed?
  • The "Why DECA" Essay: If you have an open-ended essay prompt, don't just mention DECA: mention a specific project or role that demonstrates your leadership and grit.
  • Letter of Recommendation Polish: If you have pending applications, ensure your references have all the context they need to write a strong letter, not just a generic one.

DECA in Your Resume

When you enter the professional world, your DECA experience should be framed as professional and impactful work to maximize its impact. Don't just list "DECA Member," use specific actions: managed a $500 chapter budget, presented to industry professionals or developed an integrated marketing campaign.

  • Statement: Participated in DECA marketing competition.
    • ➡️ Improvement: Developed a 20-page integrated marketing campaign targeting Gen Z demographics, resulting in a 15% projected conversion increase.
  • Statement: Helped with club money.
    • ➡️ Improvement: Managed a $500 chapter budget, reconciled expenses and coordinated fundraising initiatives that exceeded goals by 20%.
  • Statement: Gave presentations.
    • ➡️ Improvement: Presented strategic business solutions to a panel of industry professionals, receiving high-ranking scores for professional delivery and analytical depth.

The ICDC Mentality

If you are heading to Atlanta this April, master your mindset. ICDC is all about developing professionalism and representing your state or province on a global stage.

  • Act like the professional you want to be: Your behavior at the hotel, the conference center and networking events is your personal brand.
  • Treat judges as mentors: Approach your role-plays and presentations as if you are pitching to a real-world client. They aren't just giving you a score; they are giving you a critique of your professional potential.

The blazer might go into the closet after April, but the DECA Diamond stays on your resume forever. Let’s finish this year off strong!
