Finish Strong, Start Stronger: Carrying This Year’s DECA Lessons into the Future

Jun 1, 2025

As another DECA year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on all you’ve accomplished—and more importantly, what you’ve learned. Whether you competed for the first time, led your chapter, attended a conference or stepped outside your comfort zone, this year has been filled with growth. As summer begins, you’re presented with an opportunity: to take those lessons and use them to fuel what’s next.

1. Reflect on Your Journey

Before moving forward, take a moment to look back. What challenges did you overcome? What skills did you develop? Maybe you learned how to deliver a roleplay in under 10 minutes or how to navigate team dynamics in a written event. These moments weren’t just about competition; they were about confidence, communication and leadership. Write them down. Own them. They’re now part of your story.

2. Apply DECA Skills Beyond DECA

One of the best aspects of this organization is that what you learn in DECA extends beyond the classroom or competitions; it accompanies you daily. Whether it’s basic business acumen or leadership skills, apply what you’ve learned in DECA this past year to new goals. Consider pursuing a summer job or securing an internship!

3. Set Purposeful Goals for the Summer

Taking a break during summer is well needed, but that’s not all that summer is good for! Summer is a chance to grow on your terms. Whether you’re preparing for next year’s competitive event, taking on a job,or diving into a passion project, set goals that challenge you. Ask yourself: How can I Go The Extra before school starts? Maybe it’s reaching out to alumni, brushing up on performance indicators or even helping mentor incoming members. Your DECA journey doesn’t pause just because the school year ends.

4. Thank Those Who Helped You Grow

Nobody succeeds alone. This month, take the time to thank your advisor, teammates or mentors who pushed you to improve. A quick email or handwritten note can go a long way. And if you’re a senior, make space to give back—share what you’ve learned with the next generation of leaders in your chapter.

5. Remember: This Is Just the Beginning

Whether you’re returning in the fall or graduating and moving on, know that what you’ve gained from DECA will continue to shape your future. The confidence, the resilience, the ambition—it’s all still with you. So close out this year not with an ending, but with momentum.

Because you didn’t just finish strong, you’re about to start even stronger!
