Stephens College has taken its Collegiate DECA program to the next level by introducing a groundbreaking course, BUS380: The Immersive Collegiate DECA Experience. Designed to integrate Collegiate DECA’s competitive and professional development opportunities into the academic curriculum, this innovative class offers students the unique opportunity to earn college credit while honing their business acumen and leadership skills.
Created by Dr. R. Scott Taylor, Collegiate DECA Advisor and Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Studies at Stephens College, this course exemplifies the college’s forward-thinking approach to workforce readiness and experiential learning. BUS380 is more than just a course; it’s a comprehensive experience that bridges the gap between academic learning and real-world application.
The course is open to all Stephens College students as a business elective. It can be taken multiple times, allowing students to deepen their skills and continue their involvement throughout their collegiate journey.
“BUS380 is a game-changer for our Collegiate DECA members,” said Dr. Taylor. “It provides a structured framework for students to actively participate in DECA competitions, leadership activities, and professional development events while earning credit for their degree. We designed it to give students the tools to excel in the classroom, at Collegiate DECA events, and in their future careers.”
What Makes BUS380 Unique?
- Immersive Learning: Students participate in weekly sessions on competitive event preparation, leadership training, and business skills development.
- Tailored Support: The course is designed to meet students where they are, whether seasoned DECA members or exploring the organization for the first time.
- Flexibility and Depth: With the option to retake the course, students can tackle new competitive events, take on chapter leadership roles, or deepen their expertise in specific business domains.
- Professional Development: Students gain access to workshops, networking opportunities, and mentorship, preparing them for career success. (See accompanying photograph)
- Integrated Competitions: Participation in Collegiate DECA events, including the State and International Career Development Conferences, is a key curriculum component.
A Launchpad for Business Excellence
For students like Olivia Zykan, a senior majoring in fashion marketing and business administration, BUS380 has been instrumental in developing skills that directly translate to their career goals. “Through this course, I’ve had the chance to compete at the international level, network with industry professionals, and refine my business pitches,” she shared. “It’s been an incredible experience that has prepared me for life after college.”
With BUS380, Stephens College has redefined what it means to be a Collegiate DECA member, merging the excitement of competition with the rigor of academic credit. Thanks to Dr. R. Scott Taylor’s leadership and vision, this course exemplifies Stephens’ commitment to preparing students for leadership and success in a dynamic business world. #OwnYourFuture
