Collegiate DECA has over 25 competitive events. Each category offers opportunities for members with different interests, strengths, and career goals. The big question is, how do you know which event is best for you?
The best fit is the one that challenges you, builds your professional skills, connects to your interests and future career. Whether you enjoy marketing, hospitality, analyzing financial data, solving business problems, or developing presentations, there is an event where you can grow and showcase your strengths!

Find Your Competition Style
Your area of interest is only one of the first parts of your competitive event. Collegiate DECA offers three main competition formats:
- Individual Case Studies: Think quickly, analyze a business situation, and present your recommendations to a judge.
- Team Case Studies: Collaborate with a partner to evaluate a business challenge and develop a solution.
- Prepared Business Presentations: Research, develop, and prepare a business presentation in advance.
Consider whether you enjoy thinking on your feet, collaborating with others or having time to develop your ideas. Your preferred competition style can help narrow some of your options.
Understand the Ins and Outs of Each Category
Once you find a few categories that interest you, take time to explore the event guidelines and sample case studies before making your decision.
- Review the rubrics: Understand what judges look for and which skills each event emphasizes.
- Explore sample case studies: Practice analyzing real-world business scenarios to see which topics and competition styles interest you most.
- Compare event requirements: Consider whether you prefer prepared presentations, role-plays, or team-based competitions.
- Ask for advice: Connect with experienced Collegiate DECA members and advisors from your chapter. They can give you recommendations and insights on categories.
Taking time to review rubrics and practice case studies can help you feel more confident in your decision and find a competitive event that aligns with your interests and strengths.
Don't Just Choose the “Easiest” Event
The last thing I will recommend when choosing an event is to focus on finding the right fit rather than the easiest thing to compete in. Your Collegiate DECA experience is what you make of it. Choose an event that excites you, allows you to learn, and pushes you outside your comfort zone
Keep these key takeaways in mind:
- Every event develops valuable, career-ready skills.
- Genuine interest can help you stay motivated throughout your preparation.
- Trying something new can reveal strengths you didn't know you had.
- The right event should challenge you while helping you grow professionally.
